Hazelwood has the medicinal property of neutralizing the body's acidity. It is an ancient remedy first used by aboriginal people to reduce their babies' teething pain. It relieves or prevents ailments such as acid reflux, heartburn (great for pregnancy!), eczema, rashes, constipation. In order to receive the full therapeutic benefit, the necklace must be worn as much as possible. (See About Hazelwood for more details.)

How to determine the length you need:

Our children’s hazelwood necklaces come in two different sizes: 11 inches and 13 inches, or 13.5” with the gemstone models.

You should measure your little one’s neck before choosing the length. A convenient way to measure is to drape a tape measure or a piece of string around the neck to see what length you are most comfortable with. Since hazelwood is not meant to be sucked on, it is better to choose a length that will not allow the necklace to reach your child's mouth. A basic rule of thumb is if you can slide at least two fingers between the necklace and the neck, that should be the right length for your child.

As a general rule, we recommend the 11” length for ages 0 to 2 years and the 13” length for children 2 to 6. Older children may want to use one of the adult sizes.

The string used on the necklaces is steel covered in nylon which is very strong and resistant to breakage. In the event the necklace gets caught or is under too much tension, the clasp is made to be able to open to prevent choking.

Once you decide on the style, simply have your child wear it as they would any other necklace. Its important that it rests on their skin as much as possible. Each child is different, but symptoms can begin to abate as quickly as within a few days or even a few hours. Other ailments may take a couple of weeks to reach their maximum benefit. Watch the inside of the wood for darkening to see if it is having an effect. Wood that darkens deeply and quickly signals a high acidity in your child. Children with very high acidity may blow through their first necklace in just a few weeks. Subsequent ones will last much longer, up to six to twelve months. Indicators that a necklace is losing effectiveness are when the ends of the wood beads (the flesh) have turned very dark and/or symptoms return.

How to care for your hazelwood necklace:

To work effectively, your child should wear it as much as possible next to his or her skin, even in the bath. Keeping the hazelwood moist aids the wood in absorbing the body’s acidity. Wet the necklace any time your child needs an extra "boost." However, it is not recommended to wear the hazelwood in the pool, spa, or in other highly chlorinated water as it will shorten the lifespan of the necklace.

Don't be alarmed if/when the bark comes off the hazelwood beads; the wood beads will change over time as they cannot be coated with anything in order to perform their function of absorbing acidity.

To help reduce healing time for skin related problems (dry skin, cracked hands, eczema, psoriasis, etc.) consider supplementing your hazelwood necklace with Hazelwood Zinc Ointment.
