What are Soap nuts?
Soap Nuts are the dried fruit of the Chinese Soapberry tree (Sapindus Mukorossi), similar to the lychee. A long time ago, the locals in South East Asia figured out that when the nuts get wet, they release saponin, a natural cleaner, making them great for washing clothes! Soap Nuts are nature's very own answer to chemical-free personal, laundry, and household cleaning. They are environmentally friendly, organically grown, sustainably produced, biodegradable and compostable.
Concerned about nut allergies? In spite of their name, Soap Nuts are actually a fruit so there is no need for anyone with nut allergies to be concerned.
Soap Nuts are especially ideal for people with allergies to chemical detergents and synthetic perfumes, for children’s clothes and for pets. For people suffering from eczema or psoriasis, they will complement very well with your current treatments (including wearing a hazelwood necklace!)
Our Soap Nuts are organically grown in Nepal.
Using Soap Nuts As a Natural Laundry Detergent
Place 4 Soap Nuts in the small cotton bag, tie it closed, and throw it into the drum of your washing machine along with your articles of clothing that need washing. If you are washing in cold water, it is best to soak the soap nuts in their cotton bag in a bit of warm water prior to throwing them (and the soaking water) in the wash. The warm water helps the soap nuts to release the saponin which is what washes the clothes.
You can reuse this batch for 4 or 5 loads of laundry. You will know they are ready to be discarded or composted when the shells are thin and dry with no shiny pockets of saponin left in the centre. This is easiest to tell when they are dry. Alternatively, you can use 3 tablespoons (45mL) of soap nuts liquid (see recipe) per large load of laundry.
Soap Nuts are perfect for HE and front load washers as they do not create many suds! Just remember to put whole soap nuts in the drum of the machine. Soap nuts liquid can go in the detergent drawer.
Your clothes will come out clean, vibrant, and soft. Replace your regular detergents and softeners with the soap made from nature, by nature. Your clothes, your skin, your family, and your planet will thank you.
Heavy Soils
Pre-soak 4 Soap Nuts in the cotton sack in hot water for a few minutes. Add the “tea” and cotton baggy to your wash load. Add fewer clothes to your machine so the fabric has lots of room to agitate.
For Sparkling Whites
Always separate your colors. For extra stain removal, add a scoop of oxygen bleach (i.e. Oxy Clean) or washing soda.
Fabric Softener
Soap nuts naturally soften and add body to your clothes. You’ll love how your clothes feel after washing them with soap nuts. You can add a bit of distilled white vinegar to the fabric softener compartment of your washing machine for extra softness, odor control, & to keep your colors bright!
Hand Washables
Soak 2 soap nuts in hot water for a few minutes. Add the “tea” to your cool water basin.
